Editorial Services

My specialties are fiction, fantasy, and science fiction for young readers (middle grade and young adult), though I can happily work in other genres and for other target audiences. My only exceptions are horror, especially gore-filled material (a la Sweeney Todd or Dexter), erotica, and developmental editing for picturebooks (though I can copyedit and proofread).

Please note that while I can edit nonfiction, my services do not include fact-checking or indexing.

I work in the Chicago Manual of Style and can only offer editorial services for American English.
Developmental editing
-
A full, in-depth constructive critique of your work, including plot, characterization, pacing, and structure
-
You will receive (1) a letter back detailing what's working well and what areas require attention through either revision or rewriting and (2) your work with more detailed comments throughout, made in track changes.
-
$35/hr at approx. 5 pp/hr + approx. 1 hr to compile in-text notes into editorial letter

Copyediting
-
Edit your writing for clarity, spelling, grammar, and consistency in both style and text (e.g., a character who opens an umbrella against the rain on p. 5 when p. 1 stated the sun was shining)
-
You will receive (1) your work with comments and corrections throughout, made in track changes, and (2) a style sheet containing "an alphabetical list of words or terms to be capitalized, italicized, hyphenated, spelled, or otherwise treated in any way unique" to the work, per Chicago Manual of Style, edition 17, 2.55.
-
$30/hr at approx. 2-5 pp/hr, depending on level of editing required

Proofreading
-
Review your writing for spelling and grammar errors and missed inconsistencies*
-
You will receive your work with corrections throughout, made in track changes.
-
$25/hr at approx. 5-10 pp/hr
-
*NB: this should be the final stage in the editorial process and work accepted for proofreading should already be relatively clean; if it appears the work has not been copyedited, I may contact you to reassess the services you require.

All time estimates made based on double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font with one-inch margins.
